Default Europen Style Woodcarving

I see the term European style woodcarving on the WEB. Can anybody define this term and its characteristics? I know Nora Hall advertises this style. How is this different from any other style?

Thanks for the info in advance.

I think european carving is more for architectural embellishment. The terms 'classical' or 'medieval' are used as well.

Here is an article with one person's opinion on the differences:

I've also seen references to the intermediate size of carving tools as European size or style. Mostly, I think it does refer to some of the relief and architectural detail carving, but there are also books about carving-in-the-round and caricatures doen in the European style. I'm big on the Norwegian carving they used for decorating furniture.

Nice article Dave, it is good to see some of the Old World methods making their way across to the 'colonies' again.

The Europeans do like their carvings on architecture, it was a method to display their wealth, be it of the church, the city or a land owner. To have lots of carvings on your buildings had a lot to say about your place in society. It's probably still that way!
