Guys/Gals, Being new I do do a search before posting a question just to see if something pops up on what I'm looking for so I don't bother asking a question that there is lot's of information on. With that said, sorry to bother you with this if it is. A question... I am going to be taking a Leatherman tool apart and I'm using the blade to make a custom carving knife for myself. I was wondering if any epoxy that is suitable for wood and metal will do? Second of all I am also wondering what most of you do when you insert the blade into the handle? Do you drill a big round hole and fill it with a dowel that has been split to accomodate the blade or do you just drill the hole big enough to fit the blade right into the handle? Thanks again. I have found the split dowel to be fast, easy, and strong. I just tried one by making a slit in the handle and then brass rivets. What a pain! Bac k to the dowel for me.

Sean, I think I would keep the Leatherman in tacht. I'm not sure just how good that steel is, and the Leatherman is great for what it was meant for. As far as the holes, I drill two holes, and then clean out between them with a rotozip bit, with a right hand twist, so it pulls the sawdust out of the hole. I like to leave as much wood as possible on the handle. Good luck, Tom |

Hi Sean, I'm in agreement with Tom. Kepp the leatherman. There are a whole lot of old tools out there you can use for blades and old knives you can pick up at the flea market or garage sale. The two hole method Tom mention is one I frequently use. Take a look at my tutorial and make your own blades.

A Leatherman?? Aren't those tools guaranteed for life??? I'd say that you'd better check that out before you go messing with it. |

Little shavers sells blades to make your knives.... I've made 8 knives.... my first 5 I drilled holes in the handle and blade and put brass welding rod and did the wooden dowel thingie thing....with epoxie what a pain . now I do what some good knife makers do ...... fill the hole in the handle with 5 min epoxie then place the knife blade in hole.....all done. and I guarantee it will last longer than I'm going to live.
