Default What else do you carve around the house?

This question has entered my mind and I am curious to know, what else everyone carves, if anything, around their home? I see that our new member RGBONEHEAD has been carving his wife's rolling pins, weither she know yet or not is yet to be seen?

Along those lines, I began carving a piece of door frame casing, in a traditional Oak Leaf and Acorn design......just the thin 2" household variety done in Mahogany. I had a piece laying around since the house was built in 1985, sure should be dry by now, something the builders left behind, and has been collecting dust in a corner of my wood storage bench since. If it turns out decent than I'll use it for the top finish part of a door somewhere.

Maybe I just have too much time on my hands...... or those pain med's are beginning to make me think funny.....but I've been noticing all these areas of your home that could be carved nicely.....door frames, window frames, the doors themselves, arch frames, interior doors, kitchen cupboards, stairs and so on! Go outside and I go nuts.......the back deck is wood, as are the rails and posts, each post has a knob on the head, the steps are wood, even the shingles on the house are wood........! My house is surrounded by trees, Red Pine, but I know if I carve faces in them they would grow over, but oooohhhh the possibilities!

Have anyone else been chipping away at your furnature or finish in your home? Or do you stick to conventional ways and buy a block or stick to carve at?

Bob

Good question Bob,

I havent carved anything attached to the house, but I am about to carve a new valance that goes between our dining room and our den. It will be about 7.5 ft. long and about 8" wide and I am planning to care a grape and leaf pattern I worked out from a Susan Irish pattern. It will be awhile for I finish it tho, I am carving a Family sign using part of the pattern as practice first, (12"18").

Hi Gang,
In answer to the question really nothing in the structure of the house itself. Although if a tree dies in my yard I usually take time to carve a woodspirit into them. I have seven tree,s in my yard at the moment that are carved I have included a few pictures of them. The dog is "midnight my three year old black lab he is a real ham. Seems every time we get the camera out he poses for a picture. Not only is he beautiful but an excellent duck dog.

Guess the only other thing, around the house, that I carve occasionally is my THUMB!

Thumbs up Re: What else do you carve around the house?

I did build a bedroom set for the wife and I. The bed is a four post bed that I did shallow relief carving on the foot and headboard. It's a carving of a heart with a buquet flowers in the middle. Also did some shelves with some carving along the front edge. oldbearx2Harold

I carved a mantle shelf this last fall. I did a combanation of celtic knots and oak leaves( fairly simple because I'm not all that good yet) but it turned out pretty well.

My wife is really in to humming birds so a few years ago I carved a large piece of pine 1x12x8' with all humming birds in releaf form. We placed it above our french doors in the living room.
Colin, the trees look great and so do the pictures! Mike

Interesting topic. Not that I have carved anything in our house but have carved humming birds in my cousins door door, after they got a solid door. They built a new home and took the door with them. I wonder if the new owners of their old house ever put a door up?

One thing is that the door needs to be a little thicker than the normal 1 3/4 inch doors. Guess you could low relief carve a thinner door.

I'd admire to see those pieces folks....that mantle sounds interesting S-Shamrock, as does that bed headboard OldBearx2, and Gary's valance? Mike ....Hummingbirds are a great subject, perhaps we can get a look? Love your neigbourhood gang in your yard Colin, that must be the most interesting backyard in the whole area.

I always enjoy "unusual" carved subjects.....something personal, with character. Usually what you never get to see in a magazine. It's the little things that folks come up with, that they think no one would be interested in or that they would be embarassed by, that are usually at their creative best.

Some good ideas here folks, thanks for your input.

Bob
