Default Elm spoon

I have been working on this spoon for a long time, and finished it just in time for the Northern Colorado show last weekend. I learned an awful lot about carving in general, and spoons in particular during this process.

There are things I might do differently if I was to start again, but I have to say that it may be a while before I go after elm again. After that, I feel like I could just shape basswood with my fingernails.

That's a beautiful spoon, Tommy. And I hear ya on the elm. I have a whole bunch of elm I'm working up to carving on. It's hard, no doubt. But dang it's lovely stuff!

Glad that you stuck with the elm on this spoon. The grain is exceedingly beautiful and I believe that I see a face in the bowl! Nice work and thanks for sharing it.

Tommy,

Very nice job on the spoon, and the beauty of the grain on these hard woods certainly make the effort worthwhile.

I love that spoon - it's beautiful! Elm, huh? looks like it has a pretty even grain, even if it's hard - is it smooth?
Really charming spoon.

That's a beautiful spoon, Tommy. It's a good thing you stuck with it and finished it. The grain is beautiful and your carving compliments it perfectly. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous work! Those hardwoods can be tough but the rewards of seeing the beautiful grain are worth it.
