Just finished this up this morning for a fellow forum member. My first "commission" (a nifty barter ). Ken, I hope you will like it.

That is the coolest "ball in cage" I have ever seen!

Thanks folks! I appreciate all your nice comments. The first time I carved this it was from a block of catalpa (or butternut--I'm not sure) but this one is carved from a basswood goose egg. The egg is about 3 1/2" tall.

Russ, I don't have a pattern. I kinda carve this one by the seat of my pants. But I did take a few pics as I went along to show Ken. They might help a bit and I will try to explain how I carved it.

I put a heavy coat of Howard Feed-N-Wax on it for a finish. It really perks up the basswood.
