| | earliest carving memories Forgive me if this thread already exists, but what about your earliest/fondest carving memories? Maybe a pocketknife from grandad, some wood from the old tree in the front yard, or a carving lesson from a friend that got you hooked on the hobby.
Humor a romantic who loves making chips.

| | Re: earliest carving memories Probably not what you want to hear but my fondest memory of carving took place not so long ago. About 2 years now. Both my husband and I were attempting to carve a caricature from Pete LaClair's book. Our first attempts for both of us. All we had for tools were pocket knives and X-acto knives. Well at one point I cut myself really bad, blood sprayed across the room. Just a few minutes later he cut himself too. We ended up making a contest of who had the deepest cut and lost the most blood. I won!!!! The spray was about 4 feet. We got gloves after that and real tools

| | Re: earliest carving memories My fondest ----- I learned all my carving from Ron Ransom's books and I still love them and him. After a few years I wrote him a 14 page letter (and I included a gorgeous color photo of the body of a fantastic model with MY old, homely face pasted on).
Lo and behold, Ron phoned me !!! How we laughed and we've remained in touch since then. What a grand man. |

| | Re: earliest carving memories There is a similar post from back in April called "What's your story?" That made me think of when my cousin and I began carving figures from the heart redwood drawer sides of an old dresser. They looked like flat ginger bread men with no hands or feet. I still have them all and the Klein pocketknife I used to carve them. I think our first inspiration was a program called "The Woodwright's Shop." That got us hooked.
That was my earliest memory, one of my fondest was having to carve wooden utensils on a week long backpacking trip in the Trinity's in Northern Ca. We realized our need when I had to ask my cousin "Didn't you pack the utensils...?" I still have a wooden spatula (that flipped our pancakes) and some wood spoons. Good times... |
