Has anyone here heard of this Eagle Cane Project Our goal is to provide PRESENTATION CANES to a select group of They apparently carve canes for Vets who need them and present it to them for their service. I am trying to find some info about this, as soon as i get it I will post it here. Would anyone here be interested in getting a forum project together and make some canes for deserving Vets for proudly serving our country. Moderators, if this is in the wrong place or not allowed please move or delete.

Our club has made 21 eagle head canes and presented them to service men and women. For information go to www.eagleheadcane.com There is also a tutorial on the assembly at http://www.eowca.com/PDF%20Files/EagleCaneAssembly.pdf Our woodcarving club teamed up with a local wood turning club. They turned the shafts and we carved the heads. A problem that we ran into is that with the privacy issues it can be hard to get the names of potential recipients. Those who received our canes were very appreciative. Good Luck. |

| I just got this from Jack Nitz "Two big problems with what you propose, communications and accountability. Even with the structure we have, home state carvers with a representative coordinator in each participating state, we have poor quality control and a poor understanding of what is required for each cane. That is not to say that we do not have some great canes and by an large most canes are of usable quality, but even with the tutorial section and examples of canes on our web page, eaglecane.com, there is a problem. Canes should be finished in one month of receipt of the request, this to enable us to get the cane to the wounded veteran before he is moved. Trying to track the moved vets is a huge problem and when the vet is found it doubles the shipping costs plus take a lot of time. I do encourage independent carvers from states where we do not have an organized club participating. Those states without a club can be deduced from the "Participants" page of the website, and, of course, we are always looking for new clubs to join the project whether we have a rep in their State or not. I recommend you go to our web site and review the "Eagle cane Guidelines" on the Welcome page, and take a look at the "Recipients page-there you will find mostly pictures of Vets and their canes during presentation. Also of interest is the "Photos" page, this page contains mostly pictures of canes as I receive them, all pictures can be enlarged by clicking on them." Their is a list of clubs that are involved on their website, I am trying to get interest in our local club. Let me know if your club is involved and what we need to do to proceed. Thanks

Our Club made 16 canes in conjunction with a turning club. We carved the eagle heads and the turning club turned the shafts.

I applaud the carves involved in helping our service men and women. I saw a DYI show that featured such a carver. The cane was beautiful. That being said I hope I don't offend anyone by me observations. I use a cane both a conventional aluminum and a carved dogwood with a "T" handle that is about 1 inch in diameter. I have a hand like a catchers mitt. The T handle forces me to spread my fingers around the shaft of the cane to maintain a proper grip. This would be very uncomfortable for someone with a smaller hand. The eagle handles that I have seen are pretty big as far as diameter or width goes. I think even I would have trouble gripping it safely. Again, its MHO. Bill K.

| I've carved 2 heads and have applied decals and burned a number of shafts for the cane project thru the Michigan Wood Carvers Association. It's really a great program and I have been there for some of the presentations. The veterans really do appreciate the canes and efforts that go into them. As a whole the MWCA has presented over a thousand canes. Alot goes into each cane, research of the vet , creating and printing decals, carving , shaft prep and assembly and presentation. It would be quite a difficult undertaking for a forum project. |
