| | Dust collector I'am gonna move into a townhome. I'll loose my garage and the boss says I gotta do something about cleaning up act.
I am asking for opinions on dust collectors that can be used in the home or in a screened area. Noise is a concern followed by effeciency and mounting system such as in a table top, or portable so I can move it around.
Your comments are appreciated.

| | Re: Dust collector I have tried several different collectors. My advice is, that unless you can exhaust the dust to the outside, don't power carve in a room where dust will be a problem. The biggest problem is acutally holding the piece in position for the collector to work (what's efficient for the carver is not necessarily efficient for the collector). But, no matter how hard you try, nor how good the collector, some dust will get through the collector's filtration system. This advice came from my brother who's airconditioning business also works with cleaning up buildings with ventilation problems. I was not totally convinced until I started to carve some cedar. The filter became red with dust. Easy to see. Reminded me to clean the filter very often. Thought it was doing a sufficient job for me. No visible dust. But, then, after a week of carving, found a fine red patina covering everything in the room. I continue to carve in the house, but have put my collector where it exhausts through a window. This helped. But that is still the dustiest room in the house. A screened area should be perfect.

| | Re: Dust collector Thanks for the quick reply, Paul. I didn't think about powering/sanding only outside. I will think about designing a means of discharge from the screened in area and do my carving inside. I'll still need to find a quiet collector.
Thanks

| | Re: Dust collector I bought a filter "box" from Grizzly, was only 79.00 I think, its quiet and really pulls in the dust and the fumes from the woodburner..this is the single fan style, they have a double fan for I think 129.00 . I would recommend this. but as a precaution, when I am burning or using a foredom or dremel...I also use the face mask....it was 29.00, works great, doesn't fog up my glasses and is called a "dust foe"...........dave |

| | Re: Dust collector Not a power carver so I don't use any dust collector systems, but depending on the size of the piece you are intending to work on, maybe a "downdraft table" might meet your need.
