Default Dust Collection

I am trying to set up a work table for power carving and I was looking at the options for dust. I would like some opinions. Noise is a factor I know I can use a shop vac and set up a port on the table but my ears probably wouldn't take too much of the whining. I am looking at a table top model from Woodcraft

Hi John,
Welcome to the message board. If you research the past posts you should come up with a bunch of different ideas. I recently purchased a similar desk top dust collector called DC-720. It pulled the dust away as I sanded and power carved; however the finer dust went through the filter and circulated around the shop. Not cool. I have since installed a much better second filter and also a filter box behind the machine. Due to a nasty heat wave and some medical problems,I haven't tryed it much since I modifided it. My main dust collector is made from the bottom half of a house furnace utilizing the big furnace fan. Works like a charm but since it is installed on the opposite side of the shop from my workbench I purchased this other one for sanding, etc. I don't think that it was one of my wiser moves.

Thanks Dave, that's the first thing I did was to scour the forum. after a while I got caught up in all the other interesting comments. I am primarily concerned with fine dust that settles over everything and the noise. I would like to know from anyone who has one of these or the Grizzly one how well it works I would assume if it uses computer style motors it wouldn't be very noisy..

John,
This may help filter the finer dust. If you try this, let us know if it was worth the few extra dollars.

Here is a thought. Look up "downdraft sanding table. You should be able to find plans in the internet easilly. Perhaps it would work for you.

Well I was power carving some Canary wood this morning after which I went in the house and called Grizzly and ordered my desk top dust extractor.

I bought my unit from Penn State and have had it for 2 years now and use it almost daily. It will not pick up every scrap of wood shavings. What it does pick up is the harmful wood dust you can't see that will get into your lungs. For the money it's a super unit.
I even use it when I'm woodburning I set on the backside and the computer fans blows the smoke away from my eyes and nose.
