Default dremel tool question

I guess most of you will know that I make pipes Recently I just bought a dremel 300 kit with small work bench. I love it! work bench is a perfect size for my use and has a good grip and dremel tool helps me with fine detailing after the rough cut. BUT the problem is that the rpm is lil too high for polishing and waxing... the lowest setting for this tool is 5000 rpm but I need around 1500 rpm... Does anyone here know what I can do to lower the speed of my tool? Thanks!

The picture is of my bench grinder that I use to fix broken or chipped edge tools. As you can see the grinder has a built in speed control and to slow it down even more I use a router speed control I have had this one for years from Sears. If you do decide to buy a speed control unit just pay close attention to how hot your windings are getting. If your dremel gets too hot to hold in your bare hand its too hot to run just allow it to cool. If you do buy a speed control unit that has a removable fuse buy a few extra if it is shunt trip breaker no need. I prefer a fuse it is less mechanical and just designed to do one thing burn and break contact when things get too hot.

You can also use a variable speed foot control like used with power carving.

I have used this with a sewing machine motor.
Router Speed Control

It is a router speed controller, it will work with most motors that use the replaceable brushes.

A sewing machine motor has just enough power that is you have ways to adapt them they can be made into all kinds of small bench sanders, buffers etc.

get a reostat. you can make one, or buy one. Go to your search engine and enter.....(reostat), it will tell you how to make or where to buy.

Start with a single speed tool and use an electronic router speed control. The ones from Harbor Freight don't work. Get the speed control from Woodworkers Supply. You can slow it down to where the tool is barely moving yet have full torque, unlike a foot pedal. A rheostat only controls voltage so you lose torque as the tool slows. The electronic control uses a capacitor that doles out full voltage in short bursts. Two speed or multi-speed Dremels will not work with the speed control. The good news is that the one speed Dremels are cheap and the speed control will work with other tools like die grinders, flex shaft tools and angle grinders. I've tried all sorts of combinations over the years and this is the best set-up I've found.

Thanks for your tips Unfortunately I already bought the 300 model, which is variable speed, but it came with the work bench I love so it's ok (whole kit only costed me about 90 bucks with shipping).. Is there one that will work with the variable speed dremel tool? Thanks!

A rheostat, foot pedal or router speed control will not work with a built-in variable speed switch. The single speed Dremel is only $37 online. The speed control is about $50 but you will probably never have to buy another one so subsequent Dremel purchases will be cheaper. If you are planning on doing a lot of carving you will have to replace your Dremel from time to time. If it were me, I would buy the single speed and speed control and keep the 300 as a backup.
