GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

Thats an opensource software thats duplicate of PhotoShop, some say its better.

blender.org - Home

Thats an open source software for 3d modeling. I myself would say its the best out there and destroys anything you can pay thousands for. Its complicated but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. It has a scuplt tool that you can just start molding a shape into what you want

I ususally just do sketches on paper then transfer that to the wood, but you have to be a little artistic which I think most of us here are

GIMP is not a duplicate of Photoshop. It can use PS brushes and scripts, but only for convenience. Anyone who is familiar with Photoshop would have almost as much of a learning curve as someone who started from scratch.
An open source program that is a good 2D drawing program is Inkscape -- it's a vector graphics program. the output file for Inkscape is a .svg file.

You might try this. Livebrush: Free Creative Graphics Software

or this. Best Free Paint Program

Haven't used either but, they are highly recommended.
