I had a 'first' the other night, when I roughed out a spoon with a Frost draw knife I bought at Woodcraft for $15. It works great. I had the spoon roughed out and partially shaped in just a few minutes. I'd never used a draw knife, but I can definitely see where this will be a tool I frequently use. Might be something you want to check out!

Dog, You'll find that the draw knife is an excellent tool for roughing out, and you will find other uses for it as you progress! Al |

I like to use a push-pull knife. The difference is the handles are in line with the blade. Therefore you can cut by pulling the knife towards you or flip it over and push it away from you. I also made a shave horse to hold the items I'm using the push-pull knife on. Happy Carving. |

Great explanation Byron. I had wondered what the knife with the different handle configuration was for... :-[
