Default Dragon

This is a fairly big piece in that the dragon measures 29"long x 8" high x 4"wide. The pedestal is 36 x 10. It is carved from basswood and the pedestal is yellow pine. It is finished with acrylics and oil.

This piece, plus the other ones I have posted in the last couple of days, are going to be shown at the EOWA show in Tulsa in July. If I can finally make it this year.........

If I get time, I'll post some more pieces that are going.........

Nice dragon! How long did it take you to carve it? He appears to be moving fast! Nice carving!

I don't really keep track of time, Wade, but I would estimate about 250 to 300 hours. The layout took a lot of time and I had a heck of a time fitting the feet to the rounded pedstal. I went through about three different mountings before I found one that would work............

I wouldn't specifically say it is a Chinese dragon, Gene, but rather use the more general term of Asian as, at least to the best of my knowledge, the dragons of the Chinese, Japanese, Cambodians, Thais etc are very similar. In general the Asian dragon is different from the European dragon, as you probably know, in that the European version is usually winged. I have seen Asian dragons depicted with wings but they were very small whereas the European ones have wings larger than sometimes the whole body of the beast itself..........

But, then again, when it comes to dragons, there is no right and wrong. When was the last time anyone saw one of these fire breathers? That's why, in this version, I went with the turquoise colored insides (blood?) and the orangish/brownish body color..........

That's a beautiful piece of dragon carving Wolf. I enjoy an afinity for dragons and all of their species! Your Asian/Chinese Dragon is an exception piece of work, and I thank you for sharing it with us.
