just my .03 cents worth. i found out early in carving i did the same thing but what was really happening is i was improving my skill and noticed the mistakes in past carvings. my thought is to keep the early carving as you finished them so later on you can see how far you have came. if you "FIX" every thing you cant measure where you came from

I think Claude hit the nail on the head. When you first think you are finished, immediately put a finish on it. Then you can circumvent Dave's comment "Done happens moments before Ruined". Use the finished project as a learning tool.

one of the things my carving teacher always said was, "learn to quit while you're ahead". He is a very wise man. Once the piece is pretty well finished and you find yourself "tinkering" it to death, stop. At some point you are going to ruin it if you keep going.

And...a good paint job can cover a multitude of sins... just learn from the mistakes and apply it to the next one.
