Default Does this look like a good deal?

Buy Flexcut Starter Carving Set with FREE Relief Carving DVD at Woodcraft.com

I'm unfamiliar with these, though I've read about them. Some tools in there that look like something I would like to have. I currently do all of my carving with my Xacto knife and Dockyard micro tools. I like little stuff, but keeping an edge on an Xacto is a PITA sometines.

Do they arrive nice and sharp, or would I have to figure it out?

TIA

K.

Kate,
They come sharp and ready to go. I've got around twenty flexcut tools that I use mostly on basswood. Just need stropping once in a while.

I think it looks like a pretty good deal. It doesn't say what sizes they are but I paid about half that for a 5 or 6 piece palm tool set. The slipstrop sharpening stuff is about $15-$20, so it seems you are paying around $7 bucks a gouge? They do come already sharp and stay sharp with just honing. I love the ones I have and plan on buying more.

I work primarily in Walnut and harder woods, do you think that would be an issue?

Again, thanks for your feedback!

Hi Kate,

You might find the Flexcut's shaft bends too much when you're carving the harder woods (hence the name, Flexcut). While I know there are many Flexcut fans here, I think you're better off trying out one or two of their tools before you buy a whole set.

Hi Kate, seems like a good deal, I have some of the SK blades and no complaints. Another option (wish I had done this) is buy one tool at a time as needed. I carve with a group, one guy sells Denny and Drake tools, I buy what I need when I have the $$ and the need for a different size blade. This has worked out better for me then buying a whole set at once, you will always get a blade or two that you will never use. Like Mark said, for hard woods I would think the flex may be an issue.

If you do go with this set, check out this thread for a rebate!

Replacement blades for the Xacto knives come five to a package, if I remember correctly. I have some out in the work shop, but am too lazy to go out and check....and besides it's too cold out there today.

If you're in the market for the whole set, sounds good once you use the $10 rebate. But if you are consistently using small tools, and are satisfied with the results, and don't plan on doing anything else different, then I wouldn't buy the set. You might benefit from buying a Warren knife with interchangeable tools. You can pick and choose jsut what you need.

BTW--I believe you can get a 100 pack of #11 blades for the Xacto knife.
