Default What do YOU use?

A discussion in another post between Kenny and Callynne makes me curious......what do YOU use to catch chips while you are carving? In my shop, I use a BBQ apron (it has a schooner motif of course, but it works) and when I'm carving upstairs in the living room I use a lap tray I made specificly for it.

I don't even try to catch them. That's why I have a shop vac.

The gap between my shoes and socks seems to collect a lot of them. Then, as I walk around the house, I distribute them here and there. Later, when I take off my shoes, I leave a pile of them on the floor. This please my wife a lot. I try to produce a lot of chips right after she's vacuumed, so there's not really more than an hour or two for the carpet to be chip-free. She tends to giggle a lot about that. After all, what's a husband for?

Most of my carving is done over my ...work bench in my shop and the chips hit there of the floor. At the end of the day my shop vac sucks them up, my tools are straped and put away and I'm ready for the next time.

There was a time when I would clean about once a week and was always looking for my tools That got old so now it's just a habbit to clen up. Carving in my living room is out of the question unless my wife goes up north to shop and visit our daughters, Lol. Mike

I leave the chips in the bag, unless of course they are pringles!

Ditto Nancy G, althought I do have a broom and dust pan but can't find the switch for either.

I'm with Nancy I dont wear an apron and let the chips fall where they may my shop vac does a great job. Now if you were to ask my other half she would sing a different story she will tell you they are in every room in the house.

The chips fall where they want to and I use my shopvac to vaccum them up or not. Mostly not. That wa, I always have a new floor.

My little bride has been trying for years to get me in an apron, and I don't do windows either!

If I'm in the basement, I don't use anything, I just sweep up afterwards. If I'm in the 'civilized' section of the house, I have a carving apron that I use and it does a good job of catching them.

If I'm carving on my lunch break at the office, I just cover my keyboard to prevent flying chips from getting in the keys(again) and make a pile on my desk. When I'm done, I brush them into the trash.

There was a thread on this topic not too long ago. I carve in three places mostly. In the basement, I just let the chips fall where they may. When in the living room, I use a pillow case held open with a cross-stitching hoop. I carve there when the wife wants my company. The third spot is at a table that I do most of my painting. I do some "touch up" carving and let the chips accumulate on the table. Then, I just wipe them into the pillow case.
