as usual colin you have brought up a thought provoking question.I like to carve just about anything turkey, roast beef, wood.
seriously i like to carve just about anything except 20' wood spirits and relief carving. i like to work with wood and it is sometimes the subject that catches my interest.

I started carving with a passion at about age 12 in 1968 and despite all the little gidgets that I created I'd have to say that I enjoyed walking out into the woods and carving my name and the date in a tree. I still remember clearly the day that my grandfather caught me carving on the gigantic water oak in his front yard!

Through the '70's and 80's I tried everything from balls-in-the-cage to relief carvings, then in the 90's I became captivated with totem poles and carved these for many years almost exclusively and came up with some original designs. Most of the poles were small ones for indoors but I did carve about five 15 footers.... and they still stand!

About 1997 I became captivated with the woodspirit face and that has been my main concentration ever since and I especially like coming up with different faces for walking sticks... and canes as of late. I found out soon that there was a good market for these walking sticks so that motivated me quite a bit too!

With that said I'd have to say that I love carving woodspirits first, then totem poles second although I often sway over to other projects because I guess that I'm just a curious well-rounded fellow I suppose!

I least like to carve realistic wildlife whether it's birds or mammals but oh, do I respect those who have mastered such an intricate skill! I lean more toward the fantasy and whatever my mind can come up with so I do enjoy caricature carving a lot although I have very few of my own.

I LOVE to carve cottonwood bark. I have carved it for years and years and I still enjoy finding something unique about each piece. I carve faces more than any thing else, but from the beginning I see images of most anything by turning end over end, front to back. It is like looking at the clouds.The bark comes in all shapes and sizes, some soft and some brittle. The grain can be beautiful in many shades of browns, yellows and red.
