Default Do you get comments about your carvings?

Yesterday I showed a couple of my latest whittlings to my wife (we don't live together...) and when she saw one of them she asked "Did "YOU" carve it???

Well, it means that I must be getting better because she was surprised that "I" did indeed carved it.

But as always, sometimes I have better or more good comments from my sister and friends than from my wife.

How about you. Do you get this type of comments sometimes?

I am just wondering if it is because I am too affected by bad comments (or normal comments anyway) or if ... well, you know what I mean

Gilles

"No - these are what's left over from my carving the rest of the wood."

I like that answer, Claude - ha-ha. I get that, too, mostly at shows... from almost everyone. Didn't my husband at least carve the blanks for me?... was I sure I didn't only do the finishing? Am I sure I designed them? *sigh* ha... my husband making blanks... ha-ha... makes me chuckle.

Hahaha... You made my days guys (and girl...)

I suppose I needed a little reassuring, or at least a good laugh and it worked...I

I like you answers, all of them. They all have their use depending on how it is asked...

Btw, I also get the other kind of comments, like "Nice, I knew you could do these, you've always been good at that kind of things"..., but from my father... but a father is a father...

We always remember more the other type of comments.

I love your answer too Claude...

It reminds me of another one.

"is it a cat?" ... "No, it's a bear, but I'm not really good at bear carving..." or something like that.

Thanks for the smile you put in my face...

Btw LBlake, a woman at a carving course I go is good, and his husband is not so good. And when they are together, people ask him if he let her use his tools. He has to answer the truth... "I don't have the choice, it's HER tools..."

Gilles

The ones I like best is comments like this, "oh that is nice, can you carve me a Man sitting on a horse pointing his gun at a lion thats about to jump on him from a cliff"

Sure I'll carve that for you, come pick it up tomorrow.

Gilles i get the range of comments from "wow" to "oh i could do that". Whilst i thank the first comment i just shrug the second one off, i don't carve for other people i carve for ME !
i have finished a welsh love spoon and thought it was very poor and didn't like it at all but my cousin who the spoon was for said she was amazed by it.
some people will love your work some won't...no big deal.
Carve for the love of carving that is its own reward.

What I get alot of from people is "you should sell them" (having about 300). Then I say are you interested in buying some? Then it becomes quiet.

Funny people are. I used to do a lot of woodworking but don't anymore because of my back and spine issues. I could spend several weeks making a jewelry box with inlays, beautiful wood, box joints, dovetails... hand rubbed finish, it was all waisted on my wife it was the obligatory... that's nice dear. While others would woah.... that is awesome... blah blah blah. It's all in the audience and you soon learn who could give a damn.

2 years ago and I started carving. My first carving which is my avatar.... I showed it to my wife. Oh that is so cute... that is really neat... on and on. Thought she was just patronizing me. As I continued to carve she would come down and check on what I was carving.. ask about it etc. Never ever did that with my straight woodworking. She is my biggest supporter and at this point she gives it to me straight as well and let's me know what she doesn't like. She likes my carving junk... lol. Now some others that used to like my woodworking.... oh...that is nice.....

Go figure... but glad my wife likes my carving junk! Hang with other woodcarvers!

Corey

MY wife has seen me carve for the last 20 years, so little impresses her. I found that to be useful, she'll give me her criticisms without pleading, so I have a built in quality control department.
