I've done both, but find that now I'm more apt to make my own than try to find and copy someone elses. I do however use an adjustable manikin template that Lynn O'Doughty shows in his album. I find this great for trying different positions of arms and legs before actually drawing my pattern.
I just have one size of template, I draw my pattern then enlarge or reduce the size that I need on my copier.
But hey! if I see a good pattern I still save it for later .................you never know when it might come in handy

I develop all of my own patterns. I have to come up with a different santa every year. I usually draw the yearly santa out. A lot of times theres just a thought like Santa or bear or bird then Its just pick up a knife, a piece of wood and a pencil and see what happens. Some times I see something I like of someone elses and I will try my own version but I don't like to copy someone elses work or pattern. Whats weird is sometimes you sit and draw your own original pattern and proud of it being an original then open a magazine and someone else had the same idea and beat you to it.

Yes and Yes! Some are my own and some are commercial patterns, and some are commercial patterns that I modify.

I mostly do my own designs, however, when I try something new, like Flat Plane, I'll copy a Gene Messer original and follow his video so I get the feel of it.

Once I get the hang of it, it's off to my own creations.

As far as "patterns", I normally don't create patterns, maybe I should.

I just start with a rough sketch on a board, rough it out with a band saw, make chips fly, and that's it.

Nearly all of my carvings are my own designs. Several recent reliefs are based on the graphic designs of M. C. Escher - but he was not a woodcarver, unless you count making printing blocks. As far as I know, no one has attempted to copy any of my designs, but you're welcome to try.

I'll do one from a book then right away make several different ones of my own but similiar to the last design so as to get more practice. If I'm doing a scene it usually is mostly all mine. Both yet for a while.

My carvings are all mine ....
I started out in 1991 (?) using Ron Ransom's and slowly moved into my own.

In the mid/late 90s I wrote a thank you letter (no computers then) to Ron and we've been writing since.

I have done both but with limited time on my hands I tend to copy. May change if and when I am able to retire.

Create my own, main reason is that way I can't screw up! Just start whacking away and see what happens.
