Default Do You Carve for Your Spouse?

Okay, I need to know.... You may have heard that the Carpenter builds for everyone else while his wife can't get him to build for her. I know ladies who have cleaning businesses and clean other people's houses but never clean their own. I have a friend who cooks for a living, but their family always eats out, etc, etc.... I have found that I am the same way with carving. While my wife is my biggest supporter and critic, I have never carved anything for her. I have always carved gifts for others, an sold carvings to others, but not her. I am wondering how many of ya'll carve for your husband or wife? Yes or no. I am really interested in the answer.

The only way my wife does not get one of my carvings is for me to tell her right from the beginning, "This is being carved for......" I have also found that I have to let her keep the first carving of a new type until the second, or third, or whatever is carved. This started a few years ago when I realized that I was keeping the first for us. But, the following are always much better. Why not keep the best for yourself? So I do.....uhhhh.....so she does!

I do if she tells me she really likes one I let her have it. Having said that she likes money more than my carvings so if someone comes along and wants it she will sell it and have me carve her another one. She has done that more than once believe me.

As Paul says, the first carving of a new type always goes to my wife. The following ones are always better, but she still prefers the first ones. She gets them just like she got me...sort of still in the rough!

My wife got the first carving I ever did, a dragon in butternut I finished with BLO and after about 3 months she decided it needed to be painted so she painted it. Since then I carve anything for her from Basswood, I couldn't believe she painted a $23 piece of butternut.

It appears that everything that I carve belongs to her.......
So yes I carve for her.

Ha...well...not in the typical sense. She doesn't have any of my carvings,,,but all the carving I do is essentially for her! She enjoys not the carving ,,,but the benefits so to speak.
I know,,I'm off course here.

I do have just a few in the house. But it's typical of the old adage,,,"the shoe makers kids don't have shoes"

MOst of the things I carve are done for myself and no one else. However, hubby asked for tie clips for Christmas this year and I have been busy making them. I'm up to 6 or 7 now each from a different wood and slightly different shapes. Some are sanded into shape only because the wood is so darned hard but others have been shaped by tools.

He also asked me back in July to carve a greenman plaque. I've been working on it very slowly as it is the first real commission and I want to get it right.

I carve a lot for my wife anything she wants or the kids want that I can do they get. Our tree has mostly carved and scrollsawn ornaments on it, a few glass and plastic but mostly home made.

My wife has right of first refusal on everything I carve, including stuff intended as gifts for relatives or as commissions. When she exercises her option, I just go carve another one...
