I have a work bench in the garage that I use to carve at. The thing is that it's not very comfortable. Where do you guys do your carving? I'd love to see pics of your "Carving area"!

Any where I want. I'm a whittler, all I need is a knife, block of wood, and good light (and my glasses) I prefer to look for placew where cleanup is easy, or better yet, not necessary.

I have done a lot of carving in my recliner, like Sean, but lately I've been carving golf balls and I have found the "chips" have a tendency to cling to everything and are sometimes difficult to shake off. In that case, I try to keep it in the shop where my stool is made from a padded boat seat and three legs of yellow pine. Very comfortable. Michael |

I am like Sean. I have to keep my feet elevated a lot of the time due to PAD(you have seen the TV commercials I am sure), so I hang out i the recliner most f the time. I have an end table next to me that I lay out the tools on, I put a throw blanket (light weight) over my lap, and carve away. Surprisingly, the blanket catches about 95% of the chips, so clean up isn't bad at all. The only drawback is having to put all the tools away and get them out again for each carving session. Our floor in the living room is tile, so any stray chips sweep up quickly. When I need to get up, I fold the blanket over itself in my lap, then carry it to the front door where I can shake all the chips into the flowerbed..after a couple of week they age and blend right in with the bags of mulch from the home store. I really would love to have an extra room where I could set up all my stuff and leave it, but we don't have any spare room, and the houses in this part of the country don't have basements, so I am stuck in the livingroom. I do have an area in the garage where I have my band saw and my dremel set up, but it is just a tiny spot and wouldn't have enough room for a carving studio. I could stop putting the newest car in the garage (the other side of the garage has my hot tub and Nautilus machine ), but with frequent hail storms in the spring here I don't want to risk yet another 'dimpled darling" to drive around. It isn't the studio, its the artist, so carve away in your recliner and I will do the same.

I mostly carve at my kitchen table...just have to clean up real well all the time. I also carve in my recliner once in awhile, but my favorite place to carve is outside like on my deck. I can let the chips fly because there is little to no cleanup and I'm outdoors in the fresh air.

I made one of these Lapboard and carve in my comfortable easy chair in the family room and carve away. Easy to keep clean and organized. When grand kids are here they fight over who gets to use it when they carve.

same as you, Josh: a workbench on my garage, which was nice over the summer, but gets tougher come winter time in Mass. Mark |

I have a shop that is about 10' X 6' in the unfinished part of our basement. It's small and kinda and cramped but it's warm and cozy. I can pipe music in, keep it well lit and the family knows where to find me...unlike when my main pastime was fly fishing! Attached is the latest photo that I have of it. Though it's nearly 3 years old and many little things have been added or subtracted it's generally the same. Last edited by RUssL.; 10-20-2011 at 12:27 PM. |
