"If you enjoy looking at one-of-a-kind woodcarvings you will want to stop by the South Georgia Bank within the next two weeks.
South Georgia Artist – Greg Phillips, also known as the GeorgiaCarver, has put together a display in the bank lobby. Brinson Brock from the bank recently met Greg and has grown to appreciate his work. Brinson asked that Greg do a display of the various types of woodcarving that he does. You will find three different chainsaw carvings of bears and raccoons. There are also several smaller caricature carvings of a cowboy and a farmer selling his duck! There is a relief carving of an elk and unique cypress knee carvings and gnome homes.
Greg started carving more than 25 years ago. For several years this talent laid idle but 2 years ago Greg started carving again. These days the GeorgiaCarver completes on average 2 carvings per month. As a child Greg was raised in the foothills of the Ozarks in Southern Missouri. In the 1980’s Greg moved to Albany, Georgia and fell in love with Georgia. “I really love the people of South Georgia, a handshake still means something and faith in God is a part of daily lives,” says Greg. Greg has lived in Tifton, Georgia for the past 8 years. He has a full time job at Target but in his spare time he can be found doing demonstrations or completing new carvings. The GeorgiaCarver also enjoys spending time on the Woodcarving Illustrated forum at
www.woodcarvingillustrated.com with his many woodcarving friends, “ I have learned so much from my friends on this forum, we exchange ideas and help each other improve”.
The GeorgiaCarver has a website. It can be found at:
www.georgiacarver.com
The website contains many pictures of the GeorgiaCarver’s work as well as interesting information about the artist. Be sure to stop by the South Georgia bank and see Greg’s work. You will not be disappointed."
