I know quite a few of you use clay to model your projects before carving. I was curious if any of you have experimented with 3-D modeling programs to plan your projects. I am a graphic designer by trade and know my way around most macintosh publishing software. I'm sure there would be a learning curve involved but I would guess not much more than clay. Let me know what you think?

hi gadoug,,,yes i have used 3d program instead of clay :-) it is fun, and not hard to learn. i used wings3d, on a mac, and it is free, and a wonderful program. i modeled the subject, and then printed several views for measuring, and one could use them prints for pattern too. it is definitely fun and worth trying

I've been kicking this idea around in my head for a while – it's good to know that it has some merit. Doris, I would love to see some of your 3D efforts. Doug

i used so far only in two of the projects a 3d-model. once in carving my autumn statuette, the 3d model and resulted carving you can see here, the model is very simple : autumn - wip the other in a birthday carving i made, the 3d model i used for reference is attached, first just the geometry, the second with the color texture i painted for it. the final carving is here uuc - weirdo from another planet

Very cool! I think this is definitely the direction I need to follow. I would probably have to find a new wife if I brought another messy project into the living room. Thanks Doris Doug
