Default different kind of carving..

Although I feel this is related directly to carving, it doesnt really fall under any of the regular headings so I put it under off topic..

I am almost finished up a walnut rocker, which is all carved/shaped.

I did the seat all by hand, with a combination of pull-shave, gouges and scrapers. Lots of hand shaping on the entire chair - arms, legs and back spindles.

Carving the seat left me in a knee-high pile of shavings, and drenched in sweat.. Hard work!

Hey Fly - my shop is about 80 feet long by 38 feet wide, but its full of machines. WHen I am working on a few pieces of furniture it gets crowded for sure. But, it is still enough room to work comfortably.

Al - that big work table/bench is 4 by 8 feet. I do most of my work on it, and also use the carver's bench (the taller thing beside it on the left) all the time to hold work, and sand, etc.

I'd spend more time in the shop than I do (generally I work 7am to 5pm weekdays) but I want to stay married Also, having a baby boy in the house means I dont get to spend as many weekends and nights as I used to before. I love woodworking, I hope my son in a few years takes an interest as I did with my father. He started taking me to work with him when I was 3!

I will post pics of the finished rocker - I need at least one more full day to finish sanding. I just glued it all up today - with epoxy - mixed with a little walnut dust.

Thanks Dave - I am excited to get it finished and get some oil on the walnut. The grain is pretty nice but wont pop until it gets some finish on it.

Wow, on both counts! The chair is a classic and the shop is simply overwhelming. I haven't got enough room in mine to turn around in. ENVY!!!

Well, my shop is my trade.. I make custom furniture, cabinets & millwork for a living. Im a third generation woodworker. Hope my son Joe will be #4.

I worked with my dad (who is 81 and still works 40 hrs a week in the shop) until a few years ago. I sold my old shop to a long time employee, and moved to a larger community, and set up this shop. I hope to stay put for a while now! My dad still works with the fellow that bought our other shop. I wish he was closer, and could work with me. I was lucky, I got to spend a major chunk of my life working with my father. He sure taught me a lot!

Crikey!! When I pick my jaw up off the ground I may be able to speak again, but right now I am gob-smacked by the workshop. The chair is also a wonderful classic that will just explode with colour once a finish is applied. Joe.
