Default Deer in Wormy Chestnut

Wormy chestnut is a beautifull wood that once was the main income for the people in my area. In 1901 the beetles blight started and soon the Appalachian Blue Ridge mtns where I live was being destoryed of its Chestnut trees.

The people depended on the Chestnut trees for lumber and the chestnuts for their economy in its crowning glory, but it soon was all lost to the blight.

I bought a few boards from a old man about 2yrs ago,the boards had been planed several times which brought out the rich gold honey browns and beautifull grains in it.Its least 75-100 yrs old.

I relief carved this buck{deer} jumping over a log. Its 9 X 18 inches. Since these picts,I finished it with minwax which really brought out the grains and my painting.

Your comments are more than welcome. Tn~

Nice work! What is the overall size of the wood? I think that I mentioned once before on another post that at the Tellico Plains Ranger Station in the Cherokee National Forest they have a large chunk of chestnut on display that had been buried for 50 years and is still in pretty condition. I understand from the locals that here and there across the appalachians there are still a few chestnuts left but they are very rare.

Sorry,I had forgotten its 9 x 18 inches Eddy. Theres a few chestnut trees in my area, seen one yesterday driving to Johnson City but theres more in the higher mtn areas around Roan Mtn. I haven seen the larger chuck at Tellico Plains but would like too sometimes. Thanks for your input! Tn

Tn,,,nice looking piece,,,you captured it very well.

Also,,you might be glad to hear ( I was) that the forrestry dept. has come up with a disease and beetle resistant chestnut tree. You're right about how important they were. They are now planting 10,000 at a time to get them up and running.
