I went to the Dayton show this weekend, and meet Lynn and other great carvers. As a begginer the show was very inspirational and makes me want to strive to be a better carver. Now my question. There was a carver there that I wrote down his name but I lost the peice of paper. He carvered miniatures with great detail. Most of the carvings were santas. I know he was from Ohio, does anyone know who this gentleman was? If so, do you have any information on him? Thanks Mark |

Most likely it was Don Mertz - the "WoodBee Carver". He's an member of this site, but an infrequent poster. One of his carvings is displayed through Lynn's Blog. |

I am kicking myself today that I didn't purchase one of Don's carvings at the show. They were among those that stood out in the midst of an amazing gathering. I didn't count them ... but there had to be, what, ten or more CCA members in attendance? Plus several more whose carving was at that same high level. It was my first time to go to Dayton -- I'm already planning to return. I can't imagine there being a better show anywhere. Last edited by cotton; 11-13-2006 at 12:39 PM. |

Oh, and I have a D.Mertz carving! I couldn't resist buying one this year and knew that if I didn't get it THEN, I'd be mad at myself later. Wonderful detail and colors in his carvings. |

Mitchell, it sounds like I need to follow you around there next year and follow your advice on purchases.

Ha! That may not be a good idea - your wallet may get very THIN. I try to pick up at least 2/year from carvers that I like. One key idea - buy from the "older" ones first....for the obvious reasons. Sometimes you can't pass up a deal - if it becomes available. The Dayton show would be THE place to make those purchases as there are lots of carvers selling all in one place. |
