Default cutting against the grain

I made my first try at carving last week. It is a Santa head out of Basswood 3 1/2' tall. Everything went good until I got to the mustache that goes against the grain. It keeps chipping and breaking away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ???

It sounds like your knife isn't as sharp as it should be. If your tools are razor sharp they will cut against the grain just fine. Check out some of the messages posted on this site about sharpening - especially stropping
If you get that knife sharper you'll be very surprised at the difference it makes
Let us know how you're doing

Boy, you're right, there, Nancy! I think Rick Ferry said it best when someone asked him 'How sharp is sharp enough?' Reply (hope this is right) 'There is only sharp, and then varying degrees of dullness!' Or something to that effect.

By the way, has anyone heard from Rick lately? I miss his input!

Al
