Default Curious Carving

My nephew found this in a garage sale. I had never seen anything quite like it so I thought I would post it and share with all of you. You will notice that each link has one side of both of the other links. When stood on end it makes a stand to hold a bowl or jar. Have been thinking about carving one like it but haven't figured out where to start.

Joe, I carved one of those once . I was working in the school system as a janitor and the shop teacher had one of his students glue up some oak turn it on a lath to about a 3 inch diameter and then drill a 1/2" hole through it . He made it large enough so I could carve two. That oak was hard to carve and when I folded it someone put something on it and it broke. The second piece I put a dowel in and gave it to my wife for a rolling pen .She still has it. Not certain where I got the pattern

I have one of those, bought it a few years ago in a shop in North Wales Beddgelert Woodcraft The big dragon out the front is just one of the many carved items they sell. Sadly it seems they only sell, there are no carvers there.

But i could blow £5 grand in about 10 mins!

I ran across a pattern for one of those a few months ago. Not sure if it was online or in an old carving book. If I can dredge it up, I'll post here.

It is found mostly in whittling books. I have a couple that show how to carve them. It can be done with dog heads or another kind of head and id used to hold a small container such as a candle or an egg holder etc...

You can find some on Ebay with more than 3 sections like 6 or more. Some people in Bali has a lot more patience than me...
