I just cracked a nostril trying to put a hole in it. It is cracked but not completely broke off, I have no idea how long the split is but I was going to do my normal pull the piece off and then glue it back....but then I was wondering what you do? As this one is very pro/con ...if I leave it, then fill and seal it (as is)...is that better?

I have seen people use super glue. They soaked the area that was broken, then let it dry. ( I have pulled out the piece then either dropped it or glued it back upside down.) Dick |

Di, If the wood is all there, just push it back together, hold it tight, and put a little of the thin superglue on it, and you should be good to go. I would try to glue from the inside of the nostril if possible. The thin glue will wick into the fibers of the wood, and should hold it tight. They call it capillary action. Good luck, Tom |

Don't give any one a hard time and they won't hit you in the nose. Stuff it with Gause and don't blow your nose hard! lol. Goody

If its a big crack and basswood , I use Quikwood epoxy to fill it. Stuff is great to carve too. Home Depot stocks it and it does come in a darker shade for Black Walnut. Otherwise, use some scraps of the wood and create some sawdust with 150 grit sand paper and mix in a drop of wood glue to make your own filler. If nose can fall off, I'd do the pull and glue! Which island do you reside on?

I have used a trick over the years that works well on small delicate damaged pieces. Pull it apart paint both sides with super glue allow them to completely dry. Re-fit the two pieces to make sure they are perfectly fitted. Your last step is to apply a coat of super glue to one side and stick the pieces hold them with your hands moderate pressure. Make sure you are out side or in a well ventilated place. The first two coats act as a primer.

I use elmers wood glue, makes the wood um tuff as nails. I have used just filler and molded the peice and stuck it on, but normally I use elemers wood glue. Make sure you get it off the carving though, cus its hard to cover and paint

I'd suggest NOT pulling the piece off. The "fix" will probably be less visible if you don't. I'd use super glue. Here's a hint that works really well for me. Take something like a medicine dropper and poof just a tiny amount of baking soda into the crack before you add the super glue. This makes the area acidic and makes the super glue set up right away. It makes all the difference for me. Without the baking soda, it has always been hit or miss for me as to whether or not the two pieces of wood stick together. Also, you didn't say whether you are going to paint the piece or put on some kind of sealer. Just be aware of the fact that the area with the super glue will look a little different than the surrounding wood because the paint or poly won't soak in the same way. If it's still possible, try carving off a thin layer in the area after gluing. This will remove some of the surface glue, and also help to blend in the repair. Super glue, however, does soak in, so that won't totally fix the problem. The thing is, the nose is in a pretty visible place on the carving, so you want it to blend in and be as invisible as possible. If the super glue area is a little lighter than the surrounding wood, after applying the finish, you can also try putting a little darker paint in whatever you are painting the area with - just a small amount to make that area darker. Then blend it in. Hope that helps! Dan C. Last edited by Dan C; 07-14-2010 at 07:49 AM. |
