A lot of my carvings of late have been done for my other hobby of doing historical reenactments. The twin otter comb is a copy of a Seneca bone comb that dates to 1678 from NY.The swan comb is a modern adaptation. The twin beaver bowl would be a small personal eating bowl.I know these are a little different from what most carvers are doing but thought you might enjoy them. Don, Very nice work. I especially like the double swan comb. It' really neat to be able to combine two hobbies, particularly two such as yours - being able to hand make your own period pieces. |

Don, I love your combs. There are several of us here that make hair combs so please post yours anytime. I like the beaver bowl too. Did you use gouges to hollow it out? Very nice work. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Wanda

Thanks Wanda. The bowl was roughed out on the inside with an angle grinder using a Lancelot and a carbide nugget wheel. It was an excuse to try out my new toys! Then I used gouges, crooked knife and scrapers for a traditional finish that duplicates originals from 18th and 19th centuries. I think that is a neat idea and I like the carvings. Are the combs from bone? and the bowls are they a seneca style and what kind of wood it sure has a nice grain. I did a Haiti knife handle once but wasn't real happy with my results. Thanks for sharing.

Sharon and Don,thanks for your comments.Robert, the combs are carved from Micarta which is an imitation bone or ivory and carves about the same as bone. The bowl isn't a copy of any particular nation. It is carved in black walnut. Don Holsinger |
