Default cottonwood root

I just registered because while browsing the web I saw that someone had posted a note to the list asking about where they might buy some cottonwood root. I can help with that as well as with cottonwood bark - just contact me off list via e-mail albisso@bresnan.net

Cottonwood root?? Does anyone have a picture of this? I have not seen or worked with it. What does it work like?

Hi John. If you go to my picturetrail site and look in the "items for sale" album you will find a good photo of some cottonwood root. It is traditionally used to carve the southwest indian Kachina dolls but is sometimes used for other carvings as well.

Hi Cliff - thanks for the compliment. Right now I am working on a couple of realistic fish carvings. They are in the painting stage which is most challenging for me. One was begun in a class with Clark Schreibeis but we did not finish the painting and it will be another 2-3 weeks before we can get back together to finish it. The other I will try to take to that point, at least, on my own. These are brown trout which are tough to paint. Also, I find that I have to bail out of the air brush for details a lot sooner than Clark - too hard to get an irregular rust spot inside of a small white donut (hard enough) and then a dark spot in the center of that! I like the airbrush for some blending but trying details with it is too risky - finicky things those airbrushes are! I've also started a rainbow trout that I can work on as time permits. As these get done I will post photos on my picturetrail site and post a note here for those interested.
