Default Cottonwood Native American

Since it has started to warm up here in Billings Mt. I was able to start and finish this project. It is some local cottonwood I found.I cut the top feathers so thin one side got brittle and broke so I mounted it to a piece of old barn wood which blends in with the rough bark.It measures 30'' high,5''wide and 3'' thick.Let me know what you all think or if I should do anything to it.All it has on it is Henery's orange oil feed n wax.Thanx Davy

I know this piece is a little rough but it going to be auctioned off at work for an older fella that got hurt at work and needs some help. All proceeds go to his family as well as other crafts within the work place.

Woodtrapper, I think you did a real fine job on the carving he looks real mean. I must commend you on what you are doing with it, it makes a person feel good inside to help a fellow man, good for you. I always maintain, "what goes around comes around".

The way you carved that face into the wood makes it come alive. Sometimes a carving looks better when you leave much of the raw elements and you've captured that look very well. I can't see where you would want to make any changes.

Thanks everyone for your comments.Carving native americans is tough carving in my opinion. The different tribes have different looks and profiles.Since my recent move to Montana I have a new friend named Jason Standing Elk and has ask me to do some carving for his family. It is great to go to the message board to look and get tips from this big carving family.I have a long way to go but have collected a lot of wood to practice on.Thanks again and I think I will this carving as is.Davy

You dont need much practice Davy! This Native American carving fits the roughness and hardships the Native Amercians went through back in thoses days. Your did a nice job Davy on this carving! Your olde carving bud,in the Tn Mtns.

Nice work Davy. It fits an image we have of Native Americans.

I have a question, however. Is the typical American image of Native Americans, the brooding, angry, sotic image correct? Or are we creating from collective memory what is not true? I read one western author who commented that the Native American only showed such a face to others to protect himself. What do you think?
