Default Conversation Starter

Before boxing up and shipping my latest wood spirit hiking stick, I thought that I would like to share a few of the pictures of it with all of you.

This stick customer should have a real conversation starter with other hikers he meets on the trail while he is using this stick.

The topper is carved from a 3" x 10" bass wood dowel and it is trimmed at the bottom with rabbit fur. In the top is set a piece of fools gold, said in folklore to provide protection. The stick is made from a mystery sapling that I have no idea what it is. I was harvested in mid-winter when no leaves were on it.

I have sort of wanted a stick something like this for myself but just have never gotton around to making it. Does anyone else know this feeling??

Beautiful carving! I mainly do canes and I have become a little more conservative in what I personally like to walk with. I've did some pretty wild stuff for customers, but I guess I'm too shy to carry some of them around, so I lean more toward something comfortable, with smaller carvings. I like the look of bark on the shafts, with carving on the handle or spacer for mine. But MoroCreek brought me a bunch of twisted sticks he got from near his house in south Arkansas, and I'll make some walking stticks out of most of them. Now if I can only catch me a rabbit!

Millard, I so love this stick!
I haven't made a life size stick yet, just doll size ones. But I've given away so many of my wood spirits, I decided to keep a few for myself, so I guess that's the same sort of feeling.

Hi Millard, Excellent stick. I would know your carving anywhere. Very well done and sure the person receiving it will take it for a walk. Merle

Mike, you need a slow moving rabbit. My rabbit was so slow I just walked up and pulled him off the shelf at the craft store!

There are items that I do not sell, they are for me, it is very rare for me to keep something. If you want it hang on to it....as I find those are the items that help you sell other work. Great cane...

Very cleverly done. If this doesn't strike up conversation I don't know what will.
