There was an interesting article on page 84 of the WCI Holiday 2010 Issue 53 about using a Conical Slip Stone aka Gouge Stone for sharpening gouges. However, the author, Mac Proffitt from Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Supply did not state where one might purchase one of the stones. I followed the logical pathway and sent email messages to Mr. Proffitt at his mentioned email sites in the article, however, he has not responded to them. could anyone tell me where I might purchase a Conical Slip Stone aka Gouge Stone for shapening gouges. You might give this a try. Good PDF showing how to sharpen with a slipstone. At the end of the lesson it tells you where to find the stones. http://craftsmanstudio.com/pdf/Chris...Slipstones.pdf Tim |

By the way, Wayne, Flexcut makes a slip strop and they are found everywhere. Check em out. Google Flexcut (or any woodcarving supply store). Hope this helps? Tim |

Wayne, this (click here) is a great site for us carvers. I use what they call a 'gouge sharpening stone' when I chip a spot (I also have the Norton Multiform Superslip that is really helpful at times). Once it is sharp, a stone is not often used, a strop (including the SlipStrop that Tim mentioned) is the tool of choice to keep it sharp.
