Default Comedy of Errors!

So ... Last weekend I started carving on a new topper. I started out to make a Viking Stick with a copper helmet and horns and viking line trim.

So ... Hugh posted his photo tutorial about the Sew-Whet Owl and I stopped over to read through what he had to share.

So ... I really liked and understood what he was doing and remembered that there was an article in WCI this month by Cam on wood burning feathers.

So ... I thought, you know, I've never tried wood burning on one of my carvings. I've done wood burnings and I've done carving but I have never used wood burning to accent or define a carving work.

So ... Gee! I want to give this a try so I changed the copper helmet to a head band and added two long rows of feathers down the back and made the top of the helmet into buffalo fur.

So ... I finish the carving, did the painting, added the polyurethane finish and as I was adding the leather trim I am thinking something is WRONG with this picture!!!

So ... That is NOT an American Indian with a full mustache and beard. It's a Norseman sporting a full American Native's Chief's Headdress

I think when I changed boats in the middle of the creek I lost an oar! The joke is one me and too funny not to share.

Susan

PS. The wood burning worked great!

Know what you mean Susan. I do not carve many caricatures (like them, just had rather be doing other carvings). But, I have found it convenient to carve a few and use them as gifts. At the Silver Dollar City/Ozark Mountain Woodcarvers Seminar, I purchased a Gerald Sears roughout. It is a Santa holding a walking stick and with a woven basket on his back. While carving the straps for the basket, which came over his shoulders and down to the belt on either side of the buckle, I decided to turn the basket into a backpack. Looked good and was appropriate for this friend from my Park Ranger days. Got it finished and was ready for Krylon when I thought, "wonder if I should have also brought the backpack straps down to the belt in back? Uh Oh! What belt?" Yep, in my desire for change I quit what I was doing and never got back to finishing that part. Did not even notice during the painting. Sometimes we need to look at the forest instead of the trees.

Hey, that's "Barzon", an ole motorcycle gang leader from back in the late 60's. Haven't thought about him for ages. When did you meet him, and where?

How is it, Paul, that we get so involved with some of the details and totally miss the whole picture? That Norseman Chief was in my hands for at least seven days and I never saw it until I was completely finished ...

Susan,
I thought, a Frontiersman who used to have the prettiest string of ponies in the Plains, but got a chance to trade them for the prettiest war bonnet!
I think he's great, whether he's riding an iron horse or a pony. If he rides an iron horse I'll bet it's an Indian!

Bob ... Glad you got a big smile out of him. That makes it worth all the work.

Yea, with the help of this forum I think this carving is going to land on his feet. That is as long as I remember he's "Barzon - the Frontier Biker Boss Viking!"

Ha-Ha-Ha! And, Thank you, Hugh, you kindness about the carving means a lot to me

Susan
