If you start with Wayne Bartons "Techniques and Patterns" and follow his directions to the T, no matter how awkward they may feel....you will be chip carving in nothing flat! The layout is the most work, once that's done, its kind of a no brainer, just sit around and make piles of little pyramids LOL

mhudsepth or anybody, Just curious if you use a ceramic stone and whats for favorite chip knife. I just started chip carving in late June and I'm hooked. I got Wayne Bartons Dvd and design source book with a Pfeil chip knife, which I've been happy with all of it. I know Barton likes the ceramic stone and was just curious what you guys use. Thanks guys!! Bryan

Sorry to be so late in responding. Have not visited the site for several weeks. Thanks for your kind comments. I have been getting ready for a large carving show in Dollywood this coming weekend. I have a couple of new pieces that I will post after the show. As for your questions on the knives, I mostly use the Wayne Barton style. I trained with his knives and feel confortable with them. I do have other knives however they are specials by various knife makers. These have very narrow blades and work good for extremely fine work and especially lettering.

I have a Dennis Moor knife I like a lot, I have a Woody knife, that I designed a little steeper blade I really like....I also have the small Wayne Barton, but its too small for my hand...wouldn't mind having the large Barton, but no sense spending more on it......I also have a flexcut thats good lol.......
