Default Chip Carving

Does anyone do chip carving? I have done a fair amount over the past 5-6 years although I get side-tracked building some furniture and scroll sawing from time to time. I have taken several classes. Just would like to hear from other chip carvers.

I chip carve fairly often as well. With the holiday season coming up I will be chip carving ornaments.

I chip carve.Mostly on small boxes.Problem is they are not cheap enough.I also have problem choosing designs for the small areas. Most designs in the books are for plates and large designs.

I've done enough of it to learn two things ...
1. The right choice of knives can make it a lot easier and
2. I ain't got the patience to do the layout, my hats off to those who do, 'cause once that's done it's kind of enjoyable.

I do a little chip carving on bowls, boxes, and chest. Take a look at my web site at: www.achiphereachipthere.com
I took Wayne Barton's class in the late 80's and have been carving since.

Go for it! Just remember, like any other style of carving, chip carving requires practice and more practice. In early days of carving, it took me at least 4 months before I even attempted to carve a major piece. If I can answer any questions please email and I will try to help.
