Here's a chess set that's just about done. I'm thinking just a tung oil finish on both the pine & butternut. thoughts?

Looking good. Have been wanting to make one myself, but can't get up the ambition because of all the little pieces. Not sure on the finish.

You should be pleased , there is a lot of work that has gone into this project and it looks good. I think the oil will look good on the butternut , can't say for sure about the pine. Maybe just try a peice of pine and then decide. Good luck. Wayne (mj) |

Nice looking set! I like your original design. Like Wayne said, not sure what the oil would do to the pine, would look good on the butternut though...try the oil on a scrap piece of pine. I use lacquer, holds colors well and especially highlights wood grains on pine. Dries fast too. Jim |

Set looks good, I'm a little jealous- been two years I've only finished 8 of 64 pieces. Tung sounds good, for a faster build you might try tung-poly-spirits mix? Do you have a board planned?

Nice set! I started to do that once, but it took me too long to get the first piece done, so I didn't finish it. I don't know about the tung oil on the pine, either. Never tried it. Michael |

I put the tung oil on the pine & got mixed results - it's OK but not as nice as I hoped. The butternut was perfect (my favorite carving wood). Each piece took about an hr. As for a board, that's done. I took 2x2x1 strips of walnut & sugar pine & alternate gluing them together, so you end up with stripes. When dry, you rip them cross ways & glue them back together so you get alternating blocks. Added some built up edge trim & a satin poly finish. I already shipped the board so no pictures (sorry). Thanks for all the comments.
