Well done, great idea for a bowl! I am constantly amaized with what a little imagination can do with a stick of, what others would consider, firewood. Non-carving public see firewood, while carvers see all sorts of things. You see bowls, Rick sees hobo's (or the odd dog or pig), Lynn sees cowboys and indians, Hugh sees birds, and I see ships. The human race with its infinate differences is a marvelous thing. Bob

Thanks everyone for the kind words! RonT, Don't let the design elude you. I typed "spoons" into one of the search engines and became dizzy with all the design possibilities I found there! Bob (squbrigg), I agree imagination needs to be nurtured. The possibilities are endless. |

Corey, I just noticed your questions in your post. The wood was cut over a year ago. I didn't check it with a moisture meter but I could tell by its feel that it was fairly dry. I kept the piece in a plastic bag with some holes punched in it until I got the carving almost done. When I saw that it wasn't going to check, I left it out in the open. I find cherry easy to carve, not as easy as basswood of course. I use a mallet with the gouges to rough out the piece. Then just use the gouges without the mallet and pocket knives to do the fine work. I also used several homemade scrapers and "gasp" sandpaper to get the effect that I wanted. Hope this answers your questions. |
