Their prices seem a little stiff.

Check out the forums' favorite:

Heinecke does NOT do, long, thick, solid chunks of bass wood.... I've asked him. But he will do glue ups. I do not want to carve in to a void which could ruin my carving.

I recently got 2 pieces of solid Basswood from Krantz. One was 3" x 10" x 18" and the other was 4" x 12" x 18". I was going to get 24" lengths, but changed my mind. You can call or e-mail for availability.

However, I'm betting that either would take care with glue-ups to avoid voids.

Hey thanks for that info.....I'll keep it in mind as I'm not having much luck finding wood here in Iowa.

Hi Dull Knife ... I've been buying from Heinecke for many years. When the thick pieces -- 5 to 6" -- were no longer available I started buying just glue-ups from them. I bought stacks of wood 6" x 6" x 48". .... glue-ups of wood 3"x6"x 48"
Every single piece was absolutely perfect. Oh, there might be a tiny knot or something but I never found a "gap" or any distance... not even a hair width.
Most of the time I could not see the glued place unless I really looked.
I wish I could glue like that!!

A good place for large blocks of wood is www.wilcoxcarvingwood.com.
They have an add on page 85, summer issue W.C.I.
I bought a mantel blank, one piece, excellent basswood.
Hope this helps ?

Hey thanks for replies about Heinecke's gluing abilities. Since I'm having a heck of a time finding big and long chunks in my area, I'll be getting it from them.
