Default Chalice

Hello hello!
I am carving a chalice...wine goblet if you prefer It is Oak, from my yard...been drying for 2 years now. OMG the grain is the most amazing I've ever seen and I feel so lucky to have this piece. For fear of sounding like a mad woman, I will leave out my spiritual expirience BUT I am in need of some assistance. I will be using a forstner bit to start the hollowing process, yes its carved, not done on my lathe. What tool could ya'll recommend for gouging out the iside after that? I would appreciate any advice. Thanx so much!

I just got some more kutzall burrs. Typhoons or saburr tooth burrs would be good too,i think. i used mine on some spoons and they worked real well.i used them in my die grinder.sounds really cool, show some pics of it.

Hi Keoma, if I was going to do a cup, I would use a big drill bit like you, then a ball bit in my dremel or a bigger ball in my power drill since that's all I have.

Another thing I would try is a sanding wheel in the drill press, but that would be for the final sanding stages.

Why not hook it up to your lathe and hollow it out?

In your hands it will turn out just fine. I would suggest a fish tail gouge to finish hollowing it out.

I wish I had the confidence in me that you do-thank you so much! I dropped the chalice as I was coming inside and it put a small crack in the foot, but instead of beinfg devistated, I am pretty elated-it really looks old now and quite loved! The wood has spirals in it, I did not mention before and I am overjoyed at my luck!

LOL Charlie, Keoma I would turn the inside on my lathe and then carve the outside off center with a spiral down the spine. I'll be waiting to see how it turns out, don't have any fancy power carving tools but I do have a barrel of elbow grease and some spoon bit gouges.
