anyone use one? any good>? anything cheap out there ?

If the wood is round, they come in handy. If the wood is square, then all you need is a straight edge and a pencil/maker. Opposite corners and then you mark the center where the two lines intersect. This method works especially well on non regularly shaped wood also.

i have used one in the past for turning but not in carving. as brent stated a straight edge works well in most cases. but here is a sorce if you want one klingspore wood working shop. it's where i got mine and it's pretty reasonable at 5.95 Klingspor's Woodworking Shop | Quality Tools and Supplies for the Woodworker. item # BH19068
