Default Celtic design completed.

Hi folks,

Well, I finally completed that Celtic Design carving and put a heavy coat of oil finish on it. The oil is still a bit tacky in places so still some curing yet to do. Once dry, I'll put the wax to it.

But I couldn't wait to show you how it turned out. The wood tone is fantastic! I held up a polarizer filter from my 35mm camera against the front of the digital camera lens and that reduced some of the shine/glare, but you will get the idea.

It is the last photo on this page, http://community.webshots.com/album/130148443VPVMxM

I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Bob

Bob,

Thats a nice piece Bob, like seeing the in progress pic's too. What kind of wood did you use and what is the stain color, all looks good.

Ships......Fantastic work alot of hours I bet, but its worth it in the end.

Carving lap table.....did you make that yourself? I like it and it seems real functional too. I'm going to have to think about something like that.

I like too, Bob good job. I also someone else that had a lap table also, I think it was Teri, it had higher side boards, this one was designed to fit into a recliner.

ooops...sorry I ment to ask about the carving lap desk also...did you design it? quite functional looking...I would guess that it measurements would depend on the person using it and the chair it would be most used on.

I like it!

Thanks for the kind words folks, I am happy that you like it. The wood is Aformosia, no stain, just an clear oil finish. Hard wood to work, almost impossible to use edged tool on, but power carves well.

The carving tray is a design I saw at a friends house, he made one for himself for filing metal fittings, but I figured it would suit my purposes perfectly. I just took his general idea and sketched one out for myself, using my own dimensions, waist radius, hip and thigh width, etc. Used some scraps of Yellow Birch I had laying around, glued them edge to edge, sanded, bandsawed to shape, added partitions and voila! Bending the belly band was fun....helps if you are use to bending planks for ship models, ....we have a few tricks of our own!

Could be Colin that we met along life's journey.

I served several years in the Navy (RCN), on both coasts on too many ships to remember them all, then several years as a CX in the federal Penitentiary Service in a maximum security here in NB, then into industrial security since 1980. Was a active member of C.S.I.S. for years, regional chairman, board of directors, etc. I was director of security for years for a multi-national company, before a car accident shelved me in 1998. I worked a lot with local, provincial and federal police agencies, through my work in security, including: Major Crime Unit Task Forces, P.M. visits, natural disasters, emergency response coordination and various provincial initiatives. I have many close friends on The Force, both in detachments and H.Q. in Ottawa.

Could it be any of that?

Oh ya....born and raised in Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown), and have lived in N.S. (Halifax, Amherst), N.B. (Miramichi/Newcastle/Douglastown) and for a short time in B.C. (Esquimalt)

Bob
