Cool...

That's what I need, and that's what I am looking for, good inspiration pieces, and a good knife to inspire me.

Talk about inspiration, as I was bringing out our little statues and yard ornaments from winter storage this weekend, being a newbie at carving, I found myself looking at them in a much different way this year.
I can't believe the fantastic ideas and models I got from a couple of them for my future carving projects!

Blessings,

Yeah... that's the way to go.

And the more you do it, the better you get at it.

Since I began doing caricatures, I noticed that I also get ideas from people everywhere I go. I should take a pad with me to make quick drawings because I forget a lot of what I see and think of if I don't put it to use right away.

Anyway, I also began to draw again after I started wood carving as a hobby. When I was young, I was more into painting and drawing. But wood carving is a natural extension to drawing.

I took a couple of photos of the last carving I bought, and I am surprised by the details the carver added.$
I would never have tought of doing that, and the price I paid for it ($10.00) does not cover the work involved. I lost another carving just because it was from a well known carver and the price was getting too high for me. And that carving was not better than the ones I bought recently.

So buying these carvings reminded me that I shouldn't expect to sell carvings at a price I would consider fair for the work involved.

And... from now on, I will keep carving, but really really only for my pleasure...

Of course, I will continue to enjoy other carvers pieces at a price I can afford.

Oh, and I didn't mean to say that that carving was perfect, very detailed or anything. It can't compare to what some carvers on this forum do, like Lynn for example. I was comparing it more to what I do myself, and relating the price to the work done.

Gilles, those are really nice carvings you found. I especially like the first two that you posted. There's nothing like a 3D model for a "go-by" and there's nothing wrong with copying art that you admire to improve your skills. Hope the original artists got paid more than you had to pay.

There is a very wise saying: never buy art for selling,...as you will never know.. if.. it will increase in price with time; that is unless you are an art museum & history specialist,....but buy it because you like it. I never sell the art that I buy, it all has a special place that states ....this is what I love. Then that being said...some of it would bring a good price these days...but I am repeat an old statement...I do not sell my art collection from other artist. Kids can do that when I am dead and gone. One of the priceless things about doing art for me....is that people have it hanging on the wall or sitting on mantel ....some forty years later after they lost mates, moved ten times, lost most material things...will say I still have your painting on my wall, I still have that ceramic statue you made. And I am amazed that it still is special to them....some things in life are priceless. Ebay you can find some amazing stuff for a little price....I buy cracked or damaged wood statues for a little to nothing but I restore them, I have gotten junk and I have bought things that are priceless. Perhaps some day, someone will buy my old cracked statues and make them like new....and would not be a good day.... something to think about. smile

You are right Dileon, that's how I think too.

I have many guitars that I built on a wall and some that I bought. Too many for what I do these days. But they are special for me, and I keep them. Some people told me to sell what I don't use, but I can't. They are worth for me than what I would get by selling them.

And it is the same for the carvings I have.

JoeVM, these 2 are also my favorites in that first batch I bought.
