Default The carvings I bought

Here is the bigger carving in the group of 5 that I bought on Ebay. It is the one that has the more details in the face, and I love it.

It has the number 37 on the bottom, which could mean it is the 37th of of series, or that it was numbered for a show, I don't know. I don't think it is because it was carved in 1937, even if it looks old.

Any ideas about that?

The carver initials are S.P.

I will post the other ones later.

Gilles

Here is another one.

It is signed Jean P. and is supposed to be from St-Jean-Port-Joli.

It has a nice distinctive look.

This one is unsigned, which means it was not carved by a carver who sold it in a store.

But it has a Canadian look, or even a Quebec look. It should inspire me for a future carving...

And finally, this one, which is signed but difficult to read. I also like the look of this one.

That one should also inspire me for a flat plane carving.

These carvings made me realize that flat carving was also used here in Quebec, but I don't know if it was inspired by scandinavian carvings, carved by scandinavian carvers established in Canada like the Tryggs, or already part of the old style of carving used in North America.

What is your opinion about this?

Or do you know something about flat plane in North America?

Thanks,

Gilles

$20.00 for 5 carvings, so yes, the price was right.

The 5th one is a small dog that I could have done easily and just a tourist thing. So forget the dog, it becomes $5.00 each carving. And they are worth more for me. I paid that for some Netsukes I bought.

It cost around $10-15-20 for blanks, study sticks or castings to learn from.

So again, yes, the price was right...

Default Well... I did it again...

I just won that carving on Ebay today.

I liked the scene, and the price was good.

Again, I found it very inspiring for my future carvings.

Gilles, The razor knife should work perfect for you on your flat plane carvings. Good study carvings you got there.
