Default Carving in your mind!

This has been buggin me for some time now. When I cannot sleep I start to carve in my mind. I'll pick a project and go through each knife/gouge cut in my mind. If I don't think something is working out, I'll alter the cutting sequence and the cut itself until I think It'll work. This can go on for some time, as I attempt to remember and playback (in my mind) the best sequence. And of course I seldom get right back to sleep.

Am I the only one that does this?
Does this count as practice?
I've never cut myself....... yet.

Welcome to the crazy club I do this all the time, and not just when I can't sleep. I call it carving with my minds eye, minds eye is an anceint martial art technique.

Hi Tom,

I know exactly what you mean although I don't go quite as far as you do, correcting my cuts.

I go through the thought process with almost every project I'm working on fromm design, rough out, carving, sanding, finishing. I can each step in my mind, even the tools I would use and the strokes. The best part is my hands work really well, until I actually start.

Then, the drawing isn't what I imagined, the knife doesn't cut quite so deep, and of course I spill the finish and make a mess.

Oh well, so much for day dreaming and mental planning.

Oh yeah, I have imagined cutting myself but just had to change the direction of the cut.

Thats funnt Thomas! I dream of carving naked nymphs!
I put myself to sleep carving, and thinking of what I can carve. I am terrible for saying "Oh...that would be so cool on a hair stick..." Then I lay in bed at night thinking of how I can do it.
Since I cut myself pretty bad just recently, THAT stupid image comes back to haunt me! I can still see my thumb as it slides over that fine *** oak sawdust and right into the blade...oy...I shudder everytime.
The trick for me is remembering what I had planned out the night before when i awake the next morning.
Usually I can and I bound out of bed...no lolly gagging... I hug and kiss the honey...heres your hat-whats your hurry? have a nice day...kids...have a great day at school...rush rush rush...get to the shop....What was I doing again?!
THAT happens all the time...poop. But to answer your question...lol...YES I carve in my mind...especially while driving or riding in the car...honey has this rule about playing with sharp knives in the car...non carvers...I tell ya!!!

I will admit that I dream of Naked Nymphs but it has nothing to do with carving. I don't really think I want to dream about carving as in most of my dreams I'm running around naked trying to get away from some monster. If I was trying to whittle something while doing that God knows what would happen to me.....I might not wake up at the last minute just before I go over the cliff or am injested by some hairy beast. I do think about carving a lot while laying awake at 3am in the morning but I'm also hoping that I get back to sleep so I can track down that last bunch of Naked Nymphs I was chasing before that monster showed up.

Yeah I have had those dreams to Tom, Keoma in a car while driving that sounds like a safety problem. I was having trouble staying a sleep, while my wisdom teeth are coming and hurt really bad from time to time. I just wasn't getting enough, so my mother gave me some melatonin (not sure if thats how it's spelled) well about 14 hours later and holy cow that stuff gives ya really weird dreams, I was all rested up. My older bro while working as a logger would come home all wound up from the hard work he would need to fall a sleep asap, he took melatonin, works for him, it works for me to but the dreams are just crazy.

indeed, it is the best carving i have ever done,
like ron t, then i try it for real, ditto.
thomp, if you are still on the patch, that thing will make you worst nightmare , seem tame, i can't even repeat what dreams i had during the patch period, would be banned for this site and Boston too,
wish i could join Lynn in his dreams, maybe the two of us could corner one of those ,to quick for real honeys.
the best part is there are no chips to clean up , man, the Mrs would really lose it , chips in bed, better off with one of those nymph's
time to take a nap.

Hey Thomp! I'll bet you failed to mention your dreams to the Doctors. You been wonderin bout them heart attacks that you didn't feel. You know, for a fellow your age, them dreams of yours just could be the cause. You really ought to be dreamin bout carving instead.....much healthier.

Dang, when I was 35 I had amorous dreams (a lot of them) when I was 50 I dreamt about what to do after my first heart attack, "slow down" they told me, well now I'm 77 and all those wonderful amorous dreams are gone forever, and guess what, when I'm awake and asleep, I'm dreamin about carvin, problem is, there always seems to be something comming up to get me away from it, but the dreams are still there for sure.
