I imagine this has been asked before, but I like carving caricatures, and even tho I think they look OK, I am not happy with the way the wrinkles look in the clothing. Is there a simple way of doing this? I use a u gouge or v gouge and sometimes a knife, but they still don't quite look authenic. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I do appreciate the posts and carvings I see here on the message board. Thanks again for all the assistance, Emmett |

| My advice would be to purchase the book "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery" by Burne Hogarth. You will learn a great deal and it will help you a lot in your carving. When I teach my Santa carving seminars, I always recommend it to my students. From the feedback I have received, it has really helped them get to the next level in making their carvings "more realistic" and "lifelike". Good luck. |

My tried an true method is to use my wife's wooden figure doll with bendable joints. I approximate the position of the carving and drape it with cloth that simulates the clothing I plan to carve and use it as a guide for carving wrinkles. I've found that I have to carve a lot deeper than I would have done without using the model.
