hi everyone, i'm new to carving. im quite keen on the more simplistic methods with just a knife and maybe a couple of other tools (v tool, gauge etc). anyway, i would really like to make a rose or similar sort of flower. a 3D one that would be like an actualy flower but wooden. Gene sent me a video on youtube about a guy carving a rose from a potato! that was quite interesting, and definitley one route to explore. i was just wondering if anyone had any other methods/tutorials for me. would be very much appreciated. thanks, Aj |

Hello and welcome, Aj. I'm sure a tutorial exists because I remember seeing one several years ago in a carving magazine.

Aj, I noticed a book by Wanda Marsh, Carving Realistic Flowers in Wood, in the Fox Chapel Publishing catalog. One of the flowers on the cover is a rose. I haven't gotten around to ordering it yet, but it looked pretty interesting. Good luck in your carving. Beth |

There is a book by John Hagensick 'Carving the Rose'. It is carved in segments and held together with a small dowel rod. I carved a couple using his method years ago. If I can find one, I will post a pic. Randy |

I have done the flowers in the Marsh book, a very good book, I wish she had more. the thing to keep in mind is the flowers are power carved not hand carved. I made several for friends and you do get a very realistic flower with very thin petals. I don't know how you would carve the depth of detail by hand tools.

John, Thank you for bringing up that it is a power carving book all I do is with hand tools so this is one I will pass up I should have read the google review.

Hello everyone I am also new to carving having just started last winter in Florida. I was fortunate enough to have a really great group of carvers to help me. One of them a great carver of roses helped me along. I finished my first rose while still there and just finished my second rose (in butternut) a couple of weeks ago. If you are looking for something similar to the pictures attached I have instructions for the blanks and would be happy to pass along any other information if you wish. Stillgreen |
