Just a thought, I bought a old Sears vise from a yard sale. I took the metal jaws off and replaced them with some quarter inch oak. Now with the oak I have sanded a shallow half round in each side and It will close and hold without hurting the wood I am working on.

Just a thought.

Steve: Just when I think that I've taken something to the limit somebody always seems to spawn a new idea into my head! When I allow the time I'm gonna experiment around and try to incorporate your idea into a new version for my own carving vise.

I like your idea of incorporating the oak for strength and added cushion, but I'll probably still keep the leather for the ultimate "cush" that I sometimes need with my more unseasoned walking sticks.
