I am thinking about buying one of the carving videos I have seen at the local woodcraft store. I also see Nora Hall has several that she offers for sale. Are carving videos a good way to learn somemore about carving? Anybody with any experience in this area? Thanks for the replies in advance. |

Carving videos are a great way to see and learn carving. Its one thing to read a book, but another to see the actual use of the tools and techniques. When I first started I had all the Rick Butz TV series recorded and thats what got me started. I also own all of Nora Hall videos and many others, and they are good as well. The best training, hands down, is carving classes. If you are in an area without classes or just can't seem to get to them, then videos are a good second place. I would also suggest that you start building your library of good carving books as well as subscribing to the popular carving magazines. Cheers Ric |

I agree with Ric, I have 4 Nora Hall videos and they helped me with things like proper holding of gouges and switching hands. Things you don't really pick up from a plain photo and text. I may be biased tho, Nora Hall on HGTV's Modern Masters is what made me want to carve. Wish she would write a book. Rick |

If you are a beginner knife carver, a few great videos are by Tom Wolfe. He shows the proper way to hold a knife and how to cut on differnt angles and depths, etc. Big Al

I have a Gene Webb video that is VHS that i really like.. does anybody make videos on DVD? I think it would be neat to have one of the small DVD players that you could have to watch while carving.. some of the DVD players are very compact. They make small 13' TVs with VHS players for $100 or less but a DVD would be smaller and maybe even cheaper! Anybody agree? |
